When Should You Reward Your Child?

If at any time you see your child showing signs that they need to go potty, have them sit on the toilet.

Reward Timing Strategy

If they say they don't need to pee/poop, you say: "When you touch your underwear/pull at your pants, etc., your body is showing Mommy that you need to go to the bathroom to pee in the potty. Let's try sitting on the potty and see if anything happens. If you pee even just a little bit in the potty, you get a reward!" If your child really doesn't want to go to the bathroom but you know for sure they need to go potty, use the "if/then" technique. Examples: "If you sit on the potty, then we can play with your new building blocks!" "If you pee in the potty, then we can have ice cream!" It's important to stay firm - the child needs to sit on the potty before they can do whatever you promised.
